Do I Need Caravan Insurance?

Do I need Touring Caravan Insurance?

Legally, you don't need to specifically insure your touring caravan, as when it's being towed your car insurance will cover third party damage and injury, which is the legal requirement of the Road Traffic Act. However, your car insurance won't cover any damage to the caravan whilst it's being towed. It's also wise to consider protecting yourself against other risks such as theft and storm damage. Specialist Touring Caravan Insurance will cover these risks and more, so it's well worth considering.

Do I need Static Caravan Insurance?

There's no legal requirement to insure your static caravan, but you may find your chosen holiday park requires you to have insurance, in particular public liability insurance, as a condition of siting your caravan in the park. You should also consider other risks to your static caravan, with many sited in coastal areas damage cause by storm and flood isn't uncommon. With specialist Static Caravan Insurance you can cover yourself for these risks and others.

About Caravan Insurance

What's the Difference Between Static and Touring Caravans?

As the name suggests, Static Caravans are designed to stay in one place, usually at a caravan site or holiday park. Whereas Touring Caravans are designed to be easily towed behind a car, giving you the freedom to explore different destinations with your home from home. Although Touring Caravans shouldn't be confused with Motorhomes which are designed to be driven rather than towed, so need specialist motor insurance.

New For Old or Market Value?

Depending on the age of your caravan, you may have a choice of new for old or market value cover:

  • New for Old - If your caravan is stolen or is damaged beyond economical repair, your insurer will provide you a brand new caravan of the same make, model and specification, or the closest equivalent if yours is no longer available. As you need to insure the cost of a brand new caravan, new for old cover can be more expensive, particularly for older caravans.
  • Market Value - With market value cover your insurer will only pay out the cost of replacing your caravan with another of similar make, model, age and condition. You need to ensure you accurately assess the current value of your caravan when taking out cover, but for older caravans this option can be more cost-effective.

Touring Caravan Security

Unfortunately theft is a real concern for touring caravan owners, so your insurer will expect you to take suitable precautions:

  • Storage Location - Many insurers will give a discount for caravans kept at a CaSSOA accredited storage facility, so this is worth considering, especially if space on your driveway is limited.
  • Security Devices - If you keep your caravan at home you'll normally be expected to have a wheel clamp or hitch lock fitted, with some insurers requiring both. The same requirement normally applies when the caravan is in use such as on a caravan site or holiday park.
  • Trackers - Insurers will often provide a discount if your caravan is fitted with a tracking device, and for particularly high value caravans they may require one before offering cover.
