Types of Breakdown Cover

Vehicle Cover

As the name suggests, this covers a specific vehicle regardless of who is driving, some providers will even let you cover more than one vehicle under the policy. Vehicle cover is suited to households with only one or two cars, or when a car is regularly driven by multiple people.

Personal Cover

This provides cover for you as an individual when driving any car, and often will also cover you as a passenger (although some policies do have criteria on the cars they cover). You can normally add other members of your household to the policy too. Personal cover is ideal when there are multiple cars in the household, or you regularly drive multiple vehicles.

European Cover

If you're driving in Europe it's always wise to ensure you're covered in the event of a breakdown. You can either buy annual cover, which usually the same cover as normal vehicle breakdown cover when you're in the UK but with additional cover for when you're in Europe. Or you can choose a single trip policy, ideal for those one-off or infrequent trips.

What Does a Breakdown Cover Policy Provide

The level of cover depends on the options you choose, each will normally add to the price of cover so make sure you only choose the ones that matter to you, but don't skimp either, it can be a false economy.

Roadside Assistance

This is the basic cover that every policy will provide. If you're unfortunate enough to break down, your provide will send out a mechanic to try and repair your vehicle at the roadside, and if they can't they'll tow you to a nearby garage.

Vehicle or National Recovery

If your vehicle can't be fixed at the roadside after a breakdown, your provider will arrange to have you and your vehicle recovered. This is normally to your home, or a garage local to your home.

Home Assist

Most providers don't provide roadside assistance if your vehicle is at home, or very close to it. But fear not, this is where Home Assist comes in. So if you have an issue at home, such as a flat battery, with Home Assist your provider will still send someone out to try and get you on your way.

Onward Travel

If your car can't be fixed at the roadside, instead of being recovered with the vehicle, onward travel gives you more options which can be handy if you need to complete your journey. These can include hire cars, train tickets and overnight accomodation.
